Portico Entry
The Portico Entry has a two story entry with Tiffany glass in the front doors. The Grand Staircase is like those designed by Stanford White and it a free floating staircase. Tiffany light grace the view into the Great hall from the staircase.
Guests visiting the Brown family would arrive in their carriages. The butler, coming up from the basement, would greet them and would take their coast. Guests would drop their calling card into the silver tray foun don the petticoat mirror.
In the early years, a lady would check in the petticoat mirror to see if her petticoat was showing. The cande and umbrealla holder is stationed near the door for convenicence.
The King's chair, 1600 era, has two thistles on the side of the crown on the back. This is a sign of hospitality. The thistle is the national flower of Scotland and means, "Welcome." This chair is the oldest piece of furniture in the Mansion.
The two-story entry is very inviting. The electrified chandelier in the entry is a 1900 Cappa di Monte Lamp from Italy. Several steps lead up to the main floor. The stair to the second floor is an attractive feature of the entry. The rise on the steps is quite low to accommodate Mrs. Brown's petite stature.
