Founded in 1881, historic Elmwood Cemetery was the sole municipal burying ground in Coffeyville, Kansas for 30 years.

union soldierWhen visitors enter Elmwood Cemetery they will discover the beautiful Slosson Memorial gates located at the north entrance.  It is interesting to note there are no graves in this part of the cemetery as it was used for large gatherings of the townspeople for Decoration Day Services which later became Memorial Day remembrances.  Picnics and baseball games were often held in this part of the cemetery.

Standing near the entrance to the cemetery is a statue of a union soldier erected by relatives of the Grand Army of the Republic in tribute and memory of the Union Soldiers and Sailors.  The Slosson Shelter House, a place for family gatherings, is nearby.

Visitors will discover the burial sites of several Dalton Gang members, citizens of Coffeyville who defended the town during the Dalton Raid, notable Coffeyville citizens and more.  Epitaphs are found on many of the older tombstones.  Visitors will find great interest in reading the numerous personal notes found on many of the tombstones.

The grounds at Elmwood Cemetery are open to visitors every day of the year, including holidays. Visitors are encouraged to use the self guided cemetery map for detailed information on notable tombstone locations.
